Kizomba or Urbankiz? How to Choose

Kizomba or Urbankiz — how do you choose where to start?

One of the questions I hear most often from beginners is: "Should I start with Kizomba or Urbankiz?"

It usually comes from one of two reasons.

Either Kizomba looks softer, more connected and more approachable, while Urbankiz looks confusing — everyone seems to dance it differently, and from the outside it can feel robotic or overly technical.

Or there's the old idea that you need to master Kizomba before you're allowed to touch Urbankiz.

My answer to both: start with the music.

Why music is the best guide

The music is what you'll spend hours with — in classes, at socials, at parties, at home when a song comes on and you can't help moving. If the music speaks to you, learning the dance becomes so much easier. You'll want to come back. You'll practice without it feeling like practice.

So before you decide anything, try listening to both.

The best way to choose is to try in person

Attend a class in each style. Go to a social or a party — you don't have to dance, you can just listen to the music, watch people move, feel the atmosphere. Talk to dancers, ask questions. That experience will tell you more than any description could.

If you haven't tried yet, this is your chance. We still have two outdoor socials coming up — one Kizomba and one Urbankiz — each with a free introduction lesson at the beginning. No registration, no cost, no commitment.

You don't have to make a lifelong decision

Many dancers discover that the style they thought they would love isn't the one they eventually fall in love with. Others enjoy both and dance each depending on the music and the occasion.

You don't have to choose forever after your first lesson. You just have to start somewhere.

There is a whole world waiting beyond the first choice

Once you step onto the dance floor, you'll discover that Kizomba and Urbankiz are just the beginning.

On the Kizomba floor, you'll hear many different genres — Kizomba, Semba, Caribbean Zouk, Coladeira, Zouk-love, Cabo-love, Afro-zouk, Angolan Bolero, and sometimes Konpa, Ghetto Zouk and Tarraxinha. Each has its own feeling, and slowly you'll learn to interpret the music and enjoy it even more.

On the Urbankiz floor, completely different sounds and energies are waiting for you. And slowly you'll discover that it's not all Urbankiz — there are styles like Tarraxo and Douceur, each a dance world of its own. Not to mention all the possible fusion styles.

There is no wrong choice

Whatever you choose will guide you perfectly — not just on the dance floor, but in life. Because both paths lead to the same place: connection. First with your inner self, then with the music, and through the music — with your dance partner.

So if you're still wondering which style to choose, stop worrying about making the perfect decision.

Come and listen to the music. Try a class. Ask questions.

Then let your own experience guide you.
